Redesignated as a multimission carrier (CV 62) on Wednesday, 28 February 1973, after being modified to operate ASW aircraft. SLEP at Philadelphia Navy Yard 4/1985 to mid-1988. Replaced Midway as forward-deployed carrier in Japan, 1991. Island was extensively enlarged during SLEP and other modernizations. I saw this photo, I do 1966 and not know if it’s real or created. From this photo its hard to imagine the deck load spotting for the take off. Has anyone seen an aerial photo of Hornet with the B-25s spotted ready to take off? USS Hornet (CV/CVA/CVS-12) is an Essex -class aircraft carrier built for the United States Navy (USN) during World War II. Completed in late 1943, the ship was assigned to the Fast Carrier Task Force (variously designated as Task Force 38 or 58) in the Pacific Ocean, the navy’s primary offensive force during the Pacific War. Reclassified as an „Antisubmarine Warfare Support Aircraft Carrier“ and redesignated CVS-38, 30 June 1969. However, she continued to carry an later CVN 65 NavSource Online attack air group for her final overseas cruise, that took her to Vietnam. Fate: Sold for scrapping in August 1988. In August 2012 it was moved aboard the USS Hornet Museum in Alameda. In early 2014, Al Smith, a volunteer from the Museum, told Robert that the Oriskany ’s anchor would become Hornet ’s port anchor, as she only has a single starboard anchor (Al has volunteered since 1995, even before the Museum was a reality).
